Hello pot plants and books!

Hello crafting friends!

How's it going with you? I have settled into a routine and have found no shortage of things to do with my time. Household chores, walking/grooming Eva, cooking, sewing, crafting, reading and keeping in touch with friends and family account for most of it. Today I made a card that celebrates reading and indoor gardening:

There are lots of avid readers in our family and I knew when I saw the Books and Coffee stamp set by Waffle Flower, that it would be useful. I used a narrow stitched rectangle from Christina Griffiths A5 nesting set to create a base for the books, masking off a ground and blending Antique Linen distress ink upwards.

The potted cactus was stamped on top of the books, then everything was coloured with alcohol markers and fussy cut together. I positioned the group just off the edge of the rectangle and popped them up on dimensionals.

I wanted the sentiment to echo that pile of books so I stamped a blocky 'hello' three times in bright colours, trimmed them out and piled them on top of each other.

The rectangle was mounted onto a good thick card base and embellished with enamel dots.

EDITED TO ADD AN AWARD
So proud to be Honourably Mentioned at Time Out for this card :)

CHALLENGES
I'm linking this card up with Time Out Challenges, where the theme is The Arts (I've only just noticed that the optional twist was one layer... so I guess I'm not twisting this time!) I'm also joining in with this week's CAS challenge at Addicted to Stamps and More, and the All About Occasions challenge at Watercooler Wednesday.

AND IN OTHER NEWS
As well as avid readers in the family, we have a keen cactus grower too! My youngest son treats his collection with cheerful neglect and they thrive under this regime, even coming into flower for him! Since he has been away at university, they have continued to grow without any attention from us - he just sorts them out when he comes back!

A couple of bloomin' cacti - how does he do it?!!
It's the weekend tomorrow (yes, I thought you'd appreciate the reminder!) I hear a lot of people are bringing back the Sunday Roast and I see lots of people doing a family walk. How do you mark the weekend these days?

However you're spending your days, I wish you a happy weekend.

Hugs,

  2. oh Vicky this card is just stunning and so perfect for our challenge. It is the tiny details on this card that make it stand out for me-the off the edge books and the soft distress inks and the way you staggered the sentiments. I also like a good hardback book and adore cactus! Sounds like you have your plan for the days. At the weekend it is good to have hubby not working and it is often spent with me walking and he runs and then he does his craft-making music on the computer and we watch a good movie in the evening! Thanks for joining Time Out x

  5. Gosh, I have never stopped doing the Sunday roast, I think I must have missed out on this one, and I must speak to my Daughter as they always come down for Sunday lunch (but now it is at Tea-Time) My Butcher won't be too happy either.
Another really super CAS card and with a great design and colours, cute images too.
Roast beef Sunday, if you are at a loose end.

  6. Sounds very much like one of our son's and his Bonsai, he spends hours snipping, goes off to uni and leaves them with us and they always seem to thrive - apart from one which obviously misse dout on the snipping, it's now 6' tall in the garden.

A really super card and another great CAS example, subtle shading again to draw the eye to the focal element.

  8. A Beautiful card, I've been looking at those dies for a while trying to justify me buying them! I love how you have used them and placed the books just off them and the sunny yellow shading. Love the Hello's in different colours too.
As for cactus, I have a plastic one, does that count? Although I am trying to get an orchid to reflower!
    Keep safe and well

    1. I don't use them as much as my Heffy Doodles stitched rectangle dies which are perfect for A6 cards. I bought them by mistake really - but I do use them for skinny rectangle shapes and they've earned their place in the Craft Square Metre.
Er... no, plastic cacti don't count! Impressed at the orchid reflowering project though! x

  9. Well, hello from a fellow avid reader! Did I mention that one of my jobs is at a bookstore? This Waffle Flower set is so cool and its now jumped onto my wishlist. I also love the show you echoed the books with the sentiment. So brilliant!

    1. The cactus was so tiny I had to put it on the books to make it big enough to carry the card!

  11. Such a sweet card celebrating reading and gardening. Love especially that pile of books, and I must now check out the stamps you used. This card would also fit quite well at CASology (just sayin') Thanks so much for playing along at Time Out.
