Birthday cards from the edge

Hello, crafting friends!

Happy weekend and welcome to another fun challenge at Addicted to CAS! Jaydee is our hostess with the mostest today and she has chosen the word Birthday to inspire you.

And very timely for many of us I'm sure! I have a few feminine birthdays coming up and decided to go for a floral design using die cut flowers from the Country Garden die by Gemini.

This is a large die and in the past I have used snippets to cut smaller elements from it. Since then, I've decided that the best thing to do is to cut the whole thing and enjoy the left overs as and when I need them (and considering I really didn't get on with this die at first I seem to be needing them quite a lot!)

I've used a few flowers, a couple of leaves and some swirls, glueing them off the edge of my card base and trimming the overhang. The sentiment is a favourite from Uniko Simply Said Blocks.

And now it's your turn - we'd love to see your CAS birthday cards! You'll find some fabulous inspiration from my team mates, and from our special guest Chrissie Stokes, over on the Addicted to CAS challenge blog. You'll be able to use the linky tool to play along there too.

I loved Jennifer Timko's sketch at Freshly Made Sketches this week and took the liberty of rotating it 180 degrees; I'm also joining in with AAA Cards' Along the Edge with Die Cuts challenge, and The Snippets Playground (a Ruby's Challenge this fortnight) where we are invited to submit cards made with left over scraps.

My darling son was on his way home from work yesterday when he saw a little deer dash across the road and get hit by a car. Sickeningly, the driver sped off but my son held off the traffic and went into the road to see what could be done. Two ladies came to help and they were able to gently move the animal onto a coat, gently place it into the car and drive it to a local vet where, sadly, it had to be put to sleep. My son was so upset. He understood that a young wild creature cannot be returned to the wild with an injury as it wouldn't stand a chance, but he couldn't understand why the driver had driven away or why drivers in other cars were blaring their horns while he and the ladies were in the road trying to help the creature. And there we have this world in a nutshell - the best of people and the worst of people. I am so proud of my lovely son.

Sending hugs,

  1. Love the way you used your dies off the page,a brilliant card

  2. That’s a wonderfully CAS card with those pretty die cut flowers heading it. Love it.

Well done to your son and the ladies for trying to help the deer. Shame on the driver who sped off.

    Hug xxx

  3. A Beautiful card Vicky and a great take on the sketch, lovely die cuts and colours. How awful for your very kind and thoughtful son to see an injured animal ignored and people in too much of a hurry to care. Breaks my heart. God Bless him.

  4. I love your card and had to laugh about you and that die and how you have come to be friends. The story about your son touched me so. It does sum up our world, and it is no surprise to me that he is who he is.

  5. Sadly we see that all too often here in the Fens Vicky, no remorse from some drivers it seems.

A really happy and sunny card today, sure to brighten someone's Birthday.

I'll never understand why some people are so impatient and/or cruel. Your son sounds like he is a man of good character...God bless him for caring about one of God's creatures ~ Barb xx

  9. What a delightful design and colors. Great way to use a large die I will have to remember this idea.

How thoughtful of your son, too bad more people aren't like that.

    Hugs Diane

  12. Such a beautiful card, love the colours of the die cut.
The story of your Son touched my heart, thank you for sharing and you must be so proud of him for being one of the good guys in this world. I'm upset for him that the deer didn't make it but I hope the knowledge that he tried brings him comfort. Love to you both xx

  13. Hey, Vicky! I really like the simplicity of this card! I always think it's more challenging and fun when we can combine more than one challenge as inspiration and you did it perfectly. The bright pastels combined with the black and white work great. Hugs, Fran

  18. What a stunning design! I love how you stacked the pretty flowers at the top of the card leaving so many white space! . Thanks for sharing at Freshly Made Sketches.

  19. Fab use of die cuts, looks so pretty! Thanks for playing at AAA Cards, hope to see you join in with future challenges too. Stay safe and keep crafting!

  20. Love this pretty border of flowers Vicky. As for your son - what a proud Mummy moment! I witnessed a woman stop her car to rescue a sheep and lamb that had inadvertently escaped a farmer and run across a busy main road one day a couple of weeks ago; without her moving them safely to the roadside until the farmer had caught up one or both would most certainly have been killed. Similarly, there were a number of impatient drivers behind her who were beeping and trying to drive dangerously around instead of displaying a little patience and kindness. Some people! Blessed Easter wishes to you and yours!

  21. Wonderful card and great use of snippets Vicky. Needless to say I wept about the little deer - at times I despair about the human race - but good for your son and the two others who helped.
