Watercolour Winter meets Festival of Prints

It's no hardship for me to make cards but I really thought I'd finished making Christmas cards until my husband put in an order for some more yesterday. "Big ones that I can write a note in," he said. So here's what I came up with:

This wonderful paper is one of my favourites from the gorgeous Festival of Prints designer paper stack. It's lovely and subtle, pale enough to stamp onto effectively and looks great inked round the edges with Marina Mist ink.

I started with this beautiful sentiment from Delightful Dozen which I inked up with Raspberry Ripple then stamped holly in two corners which I coloured in with markers. Watercolour Winter has to be one of my favourite Christmas stamp sets ever and I will certainly not be parting with it! It will only be available until the end of January so if you're a fan of these beautiful images too, don't miss your chance to get it!

If I zoom in here you can see that the paper shows through the colouring - an effect I really like. This was another very quick design - well, it wouldn't do to keep his lordship waiting now would it?!

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Delightful Dozen, Watercolour Winter
Ink: Marina Mist, Raspberry Ripple classic inks plus markers
Card stock: Whisper White
Other: Festival of Prints designer paper stack, Stamp-a-majig
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK. I'm committed to providing excellent customer service and am always happy to offer help and advice. To place your order, just send me an email or give me a call on +44 (0) 1280 820593.

And now that's it for a bit while I make merry with my lovely family over Christmas! But before I go off and wrestle with paper chains and turkeys (but not at the same time!) I'd like to say a really huge thank you to all my readers and customers for your support throughout the year. Running my Stampin' Up business is a dream come true for me and it's you that makes it possible. I'm wishing you a very happy Christmas indeed and I'll see you soon.

Hugs,

Merry monochrome Christmas

It's always fun having a play around with colours and seeing what different effects you can get, but sometimes it's a nice idea to pare everything right back and make a card with just one colour and a neutral. That's what I did with todays card, choosing the rich, deep pinkish red of Raspberry Ripple and the purity of Very Vanilla. Come and see:

This card uses a favourite technique of mine - to stamp a panel then mask off the centre and sponge round the edges to make a inked frame. I love the way the stamped image appears through the ink on the frame.

With monochrome the danger is that the eye can see it as too 'samey' so the secret is to add texture. There's plenty of detail in this two step poinsettia from Watercolour Winter and I've added a pierced detail to the frame with my Essentials paper-piercing templates as well as a bit of sparkle to the centres of the flowers with Cherry Cobbler Dazzling Details.

This gorgeous sentiment from Beautiful Season has plenty of movement in it - although thinking about it now, I would have embossed it if I were to make the card again.

Here's how to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Beautiful Season (sentiment)
Ink: Raspberry Ripple
Card stock: Very Vanilla
Other: Essentials paper-piercing pack, Cherry Cobbler Dazzling Details, stamp-a-majig

What is it about teenage boys that makes them feel invincible?! My eldest son disappeared into the frost at the weekend 'practically naked' (wearing a t-shirt and jeans with a thin hoodie over the top) and returned with the kind of steam coming off him that you normally see when you open the freezer. I tried to give him a woolly scarf this morning as he set off for school but he looked at me in horror and ran away shrieking!

It's Three Minute Thursday here tomorrow so I'll be back with something fast. See you then.

MORE Watercolour Winter!

Last week, just before I keeled over (!) I made this card for the fabulous new CAS Colours and Sketches challenge. I was rather taken with the sketch and thought I'd use it for another card but with more conventional Christmas colours this time. Come and have a look:

I used the same quick technique - cutting thin strips of a post it note and using them to form a masked cross on my central panel before stamping my design. This time, I used the outline holly image from Watercolour Winter and coloured it with markers then sponged in a background with Pool Party ink. The mask was then peeled carefully away, a stamped sentiment added to the centre using dimensionals, then the whole panel attached to a card base.

I love these colours - they remind me of those bright and frosty Christmas mornings, which is what I like to have if we're not having a white one!

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Timeless Type (sentiment)
Ink: Early Espresso, Pool Party, Raspberry Ripple
Card stock: Very Vanilla, Naturals Ivory
Other: Markers

I don't know what it is but we're all ready for Christmas in our house and it's taking great restraint not to rush out and get the Christmas tree! Last night, my daughter and I made a Christmas playlist together and I can't remember when I've laughed so much. Naturally we had to do tossing our pony tails and neighing along to the Sleigh Ride song and we were doubled up over a video of Slade singing Merry Christmas Everyone in a studio where you could hear someone hammering and drilling in the background. Ahhh Christmas - don't you just love it!

I'll be back tomorrow with more crafting fun - see you then!

Christmas knitwear and holly

Before I start today, can I just say a sincere thank you to all those who have left me such kind messages while I've been ill and to my customers who have been so patient and thoughtful. It really isn't like me to take to my bed, but sometimes the rug just gets pulled from under your feet...

Anyway, I'm back today with a card for Less is More where there's a colour challenge - Red and Green. What could be more appropriate for the festive season?! Here's my effort:

This year I've been enjoying playing with the contrast between woolly backgrounds and seasonal greenery. The background here has been stamped using a variety of stamps from Make a Mitten, while the sprig is from the two-step stamping set Watercolour Winter.

You've seen me use Watercolour Winter loads this season as I love it to bits, but I wanted to show you this picture because this is what the sprig looks like when it has its outline stamp 'coloured in' with the filler stamp. It's not supposed to match up exactly which is what gives it this wonderful arty style. I spent a few minutes cutting my holly out with my sharp paper snips for this card which is something I enjoy, but it's not one to make in large batches!

The sentiment and the berries were stamped in Riding Hood Red, which I thought contrasted nicely with the Bravo Burgundy knitted background, and I chose Garden Green for the holly leaves from the same colour collection.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Make a Mitten, Watercolour Winter, Teeny Tiny Wishes
Ink: Bravo Burgundy, Riding Hood Red, Early Espresso classic inks, Riding Hood Red and Garden Green markers
Card stock: Very Vanilla
Other: Stamp-a-majig, paper snips

I found it pretty scary being ill, especially as my husband wasn't well for a day or two either (although he's so macho he just carried on regardless!) While I was in bed, the children came to visit me regularly and my youngest son was his usual uplifting self. "Mummy I've just realised..." he cried one evening, bursting into my room. "ALL my life..." he began, as though his eleven years stretched back for decades. "I've been thinking that I've been making a penguin noise - but really I've just been doing a duck!"

See you tomorrow,

Another way to use Watercolour Winter

I am delighted to see there's another fabulous new CAS challenge site in blogland, CAS - Colours and Sketches, and I'm even more delighted to have been asked to guest for their very first challenge!  Here's the sketch and colour combination, a really lovely autumnal mix of colours, but being someone who is a bit of a lunatic likes a challenge, I gave myself the extra test of turning them into a Christmas card! Not only that, but it's Three Minute Thursday here on my blog today, so it has to be a quick card... aaargh! Can I do it? Well, come and have a look:

If I were asked what my favourite Christmas stamp set is this season, I would unhesitatingly reply Watercolour Winter! It's a two step stamping set, which makes it very versatile - you can stamp the outline images and stamp the 'colouring in' over the top OR you can stamp the outline images and colour in using an aquapainter, markers, pencils, crayons etc OR you can do what I've done today: use one of the 'colouring in' images as a background and stamp the corresponding outline image randomly over the top!

I masked my panel with thin strips of post it note and stamped my design using Pumpkin Pie and Chocolate Chip inks. The berries were added with a Cherry Cobbler marker before peeling the strips away. The panel was then attached to the card base, leaving lots of lovely space, and the sentiment was stamped, punched out with the Decorative Label punch and added to the centre using dimensionals.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Beautiful Season (sentiment)
Ink: Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Chip classic ink, Cherry Cobbler marker
Card stock: Very Vanilla
Other: Decorative Label punch
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK, France, Deutschland, Nederland or Osterreich. I'm committed to providing excellent customer service and am always happy to offer help and advice. So did I make a Christmas card using these autumnal colours? Yes! Did I come up with a design that can be made in three minutes? Yes! Am I in a heap on the floor because I've still got the lurgy? Yes! Never mind, I think my husband is going for the title of 'Husband of the Year' as he's stepped in and cooked, tidied and supplied me with lemsip and hot water bottles - well it's either that, or he's expecting a very large, expensive Christmas present this year!

EDITED TO ADD: My lurgy has turned out to be bronchitis and my poor husband has now developed an abscess on his gum so that's both of us out of action. The children are doing an excellent job of holding the fort but I think it's safe to say that I won't be here tomorrow. Hope to see you very soon though.

Merry and Type in the pink

The annual Stampin' Up convention took place in Mainz, Germany last weekend and although I wasn't able to go this time, I've been shown photos and swaps and drooled over all the gorgeous freebies. I'm determined to go next year when it will be held in Manchester here in the UK, and it would be fantastic if my lovely team could come along with me! If you'd like to come too, then why not join Stampin' Up? It's always a great time to join but there's an extra deal this month - read all about it here. Who knows, it could be the perfect thing for you!

Back to today and I'm carrying on with my Christmas designs. This one was inspired by the 'Pink' theme at Less is More. Now, pink is not my first choice of colour, particularly not for Christmas, so this was a real challenge for me. Here's what happened:

(The card proved to be a nightmare to photograph so bear with me...!) I started off by stamping the baubles from Merry and Type with versamark, heat embossing them with silver embossing powder and colouring them with Pink Pirouette, Pretty in Pink and Sahara Sand markers. Then they were ready for a touch of Dazzling Diamonds glitter...

... and here you can see how lovely and shiny and glittery they are. The large one at the bottom got a bit of extra sparkle with a large rhinestone!

Watercolour Winter was the first Christmas stamp set I bought this year partly because I knew how useful the pine needle stamp would be for this sort of thing. The sentiment is from Petite Pairs and was cut out with the word window punch.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Merry and Type, Watercolour Winter, Petite Pairs
Ink: Always Artichoke, Rose Red
Card stock: Very Vanilla, Pink Pirouette
Other: Versamark, silver embossing powder, heat tool, Dazzling Diamonds glitter, Word Window punch, markers, Basic Rhinestones

It's nearly the weekend again! Are you doing anything nice? I thought I might take a look in at the little bric-a-brac market in Buckingham - I love browsing round markets and car boot sales. The boys are not so keen on this activity and my youngest son complained bitterly when I asked him to accompany me to one on holiday this summer. "You'd enjoy it more if you were to start a collection of something like stamps or egg cups," I told him. "Would you like to start collecting something?" He looked at me artfully. "Yes," he said. "Wireless network adaptors!"

Have a lovely weekend and I'll see you very soon,

Deck the halls with one layer of holly

The lovely Ardyth is hosting One Layer Wednesday this week - or is that last week?! - and her challenge is to create a one layer card based on a song. I could've gone anywhere with this but it was half term so my time was limited, and also I needed to get on with Christmas cards, so I went with the rather predictable 'Deck the halls with boughs of holly'. Come and see:

The gorgeous focal sentiment comes from my new Merry and Type stamp set which not only contains some fabulous vintage-style sentiments but some fabulous strong images too. I can't wait to show you more cards made with it! On this card, I masked the sentiment with a cut-to-size post it note before stamping the holly outline image from Watercolour Winter and colouring it in with ink and an aquapainter.

If I zoom in you can see the effect. I love the different shades you get on the leaves with just one ink and adding a dot with a Soft Suede marker makes the berries look more realistic. After removing the mask I gave my sentiment a double frame with the Simply Scored board and sponged the edges of the card with River Rock ink.

You may have noticed (!) that my sentiment isn't as crisp as it could be. I was using my old-style ink pad, and perhaps it could do with a re-fill, but the new firm foam-filled pads give a much better, cleaner finish - even with solid stamps - with just a light tap into the ink. My new in-colour ink pads came in the new style and this is what the sentiment looks like in Raspberry Ripple...

...much crisper, even on the porous Naturals Ivory card stock, and with no pressure into the ink pad at all. Amazing!

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Merry and Type, Watercolour Winter
Ink: Cherry Cobbler, Gumball Green, Riding Hood Red, River Rock, Soft Suede
Card stock: Naturals Ivory
Other: Markers, Simply Scored, aquapainter, stamp-a-majig
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK, France, Deutschland, Nederland or Osterreich. The children went back to school yesterday. I'd tried to schedule posts during half term so that I had more time to spend with them and we did have fun. The last day of the holiday was wet and windy, so we curled up in front of the fire with a board game we'd found in a charity shop called Game of Life - does anyone remember it? It's a great game where a combination of your choices and the roll of the dice gets you through 'life'. I'm still chuckling over my youngest son, who, on landing on yet another 'pay up' square, looked up, sighed and said: "There's no end to the bills - am I right?!" This is mostly funny because he's a very English child - I think he must have been watching too much American TV!

I'll be back tomorrow with something suitable for a male birthday. Hope you'll come back and have a look!

Watercolour Winter poinsettia

I'm making loads of Christmas cards now, because I'd love to get them done ready for early posting this year, and I'm finding the CASE this Sketch challenge excellent inspiration! I almost missed the entry deadline again this week but I'm hoping to just squeak in with today's card! Come and have a look:

I'm a huge fan of the Watercolour Winter stamp set in the seasonal catalogue and thought the poinsettia would make a lovely focal point for the circular element in the sketch.

It's a two step set, with an outline and a filler stamp for each image - which is why it looks so arty! I stamped it several times and cut out sections to layer up on dimensionals, finishing the centre with dots of glue embossed in gold.

The background strip was masked off using post it notes and stamped in versamark using the En Français background stamp. I clear embossed this, sponging over it with green inks before removing the masks. A strip of Raspberry Ripple card stock balances out the flower...

... and this lovely sentiment from Beautiful Season, which I inked in versamark then straight into Raspberry Ripple ink before stamping and clear embossing.

This is the fabulous sketch I've been working with today.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Beautiful Season, En Français
Ink: Certainly Celery, Gumball Green, Raspberry Ripple
Card stock: Very Vanilla
Other: Clear and gold embossing powders, versamark, heat tool, 1 3/8" circle punch, paper snips, stamp-a-majig
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK, France, Deutschland, Nederland or Osterreich. It's half term here at the moment and I'm enjoying having all my children wandering in and out. I spotted my youngest son tucking into an apple yesterday morning and asked him if he'd mind bringing me one, so he did - in the style of the wicked queen from Snow White. "Would you like one of these apples that certainly aren't poisoned in any way?" he said holding out the bowl. I selected one and he made me jump with a very convincing witchy cackle. Perhaps he's practising for halloween. I was rather hoping one bite would've sent me off into a really long sleep but no such luck I'm afraid!

Enjoy your Tuesday! I'll be back tomorrow with a tutorial for my wrap around box so do join me for that.

Hugs,

Watercolour Winter cloisonné technique

What a glorious, sunny, frosty morning it was this morning - just the sort of morning that sets you off nicely on a Christmas card! I played with the sketch at Less is More, turning it on its side. Come and have a look:

I started by stamping my lovely Watercolour Winter holly into versamark, then straight into Soft Suede ink before stamping onto my card stock. I clear embossed that, sponged the background with Tempting Turquoise ink, then coloured the holly and berries with markers. Tiles were cut out with my large square punch and arranged onto a strip of Tempting Turquoise card stock.

This provided the background for a cute robin - I do love a robin on a card! This one was made with the bird from Everything Eleanor - I stamped him in Soft Suede ink and then coloured over his breast with a Tangerine Tango marker before cutting him out with my sharp paper snips. I added Dazzling Diamonds glitter to the holly and you can just about make it out in this photo. It's lovely and sparkly in real life.

I love the cloisonné effect of the holly and will certainly try this technique again. The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Wishes which is a real go-to set for me. I stamped it into Soft Suede ink and used my Tangerine Tango marker on the words before stamping to give it this slight glow.

This is the Less is More sketch that I've been working from today.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Everything Eleanor (bird), Teeny Tiny Wishes (sentiment)
Ink: Tempting Turquoise, Soft Suede
Card stock: Whisper White, Tempting Turquoise
Other: 1 3/8" square punch, versamark, clear embossing powder, heat tool, Dazzling Diamonds glitter
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK, France, Deutschland, Nederland or Osterreich. After I've posted this, I must get off to the market to buy the week's fruit and veg. Last week my lovely husband went and when he'd come back I heard a groan from the kitchen. "Are you alright?" I called. "No!" came the reply. "I've just bought seven melons by accident!" I giggled. "How did you manage that?" I asked. "I don't know," he said in an agonised voice. There was a pause before he said: "I hope everyone likes melons!"

I hope the sun is shining on you wherever you are. Enjoy your weekend won't you!

Christmas hearts for a Beautiful Season

Any minute now, I'm going to need to send out some Christmas cards! Well, okay, that might be a slight exaggeration but it's only 45 days until the 1st of December and people certainly like to display cards in December don't they?! I thought I'd better crack on with some so, inspired by the gorgeous Green, Brown, Cream and Gold colour scheme at 52 {Christmas} Card Throwdown, and the Heart theme at CASual Fridays, here's what I came up with:

I made a mask with one of my Labels framelits and sponged Summer Starfruit ink into it to create a golden glow. The pine needles from Watercolour Winter were stamped over the top and Early Espresso ink sponged round one side for a little definition before removing the mask.

The heart ornaments from Tiny Tags were stamped in versmark on Naturals Ivory then heat embossed in gold. I used the small heart punch when cutting them out - it's not an exact fit but it certainly helps! The card was finished with this lovely sentiment from Beautiful Season.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Tiny Tags, Beautiful Season (sentiment)
Ink: Summer Starfruit, Gumball Green, Early Espresso
Card stock: Very Vanilla, scrap of Naturals Ivory
Other: Big Shot, Labels framelits, Sahara Sand marker, versamark, gold embossing powder, heat tool, stamp-a-majig
I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK, France, Deutschland, Nederland or Osterreich. I'm committed to providing excellent customer service and am always happy to offer help and advice. To place your order, just send me an email or give me a call on +44 (0) 1280 820593.

I was listening to the great Pam Ayres on the radio yesterday and was delighted to hear some of her housework tips: Fed up with hoovering but like the warmth of carpet? Pam recommends installing hard flooring and sticking bits of carpet to your slippers instead! Cleaning your windows is a mistake she says - dirty windows stop people from looking in and seeing the mess! I may not have taken all her advice but my housework was done in record time!

I'll have a designer paper idea for you tomorrow - hope to see you then!

Watercolor Winter woolliness

It's no good, it's freezing! There's only one thing to do this weather... make Christmas cards! Here's one I made using some of my new goodies from the autumn/winter catalogue:

If you like a bit of designer paper on your cards but don't want to invest in whole packs of 12 x 12", then the festival of Prints stack at only £6.25 might be just the thing for you. It contains 48 double-sided sheets of a much smaller size that's perfect for card making (11.4 x 16.5cm) and the designs include a trendy chevron, a gorgeous rustic check and some fabulous Christmassy damasks. I chose this subtle blue print with its suggestion of snow for my card.

I've wanted a stamp set with holly and other winter foliage for ages and the Watercolor Winter set is just right! It's a two step stamping set but this time I chose to stamp only the holly outline and coloured it in with markers for a different look. I used a marker to doodle some wool over one of my branches too...

... and attached these gorgeous mittens to it! They're from the Make a Mitten set which coordinates with the wonderful Nicely Knit wheel I used yesterday. I stamped them in Gumball Green over Marina Mist card stock, which makes a rather stylish mitten - wouldn't mind a pair of these myself! The sentiment is from For My Family - the perfect set for personalising cards to the family.

I'm a day late for Rudolph Day over at Sandra's blog but (panting) I ran all the way Miss!

Here's what you'll need to make today's card
Stamps: Watercolor Winter, Make a Mitten, For My Family
Ink: Gumball Green, Real Red, Early Espresso
Card stock: Whisper White, Marina Mist
Other: Simply Scored, stamp-a-majig, paper snips, markers

I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK. I'm committed to providing excellent customer service and am always happy to offer help and advice. To place your order, just send me an email or give me a call on 01280 820593. Click here to view my regularly updated lists of retiring stamps and accessories, some at up to 40% discount - Sunday 30th is the last day to order from Retirement Lists.

My youngest son likes to wrap himself up in a blanket to watch TV whatever the weather. "Blankets are the best thing ever invented," he said the other day, tucking himself up with one. "Apart from the internet." He paused for a moment before adding: "And toilets!"

It's Three Minute Thursday tomorrow so I'll be back here with a fast card. See you then,

Framed Watercolour Winter

I love this week's Less is More challenge where Chrissie and Mandi have gone all oval! Come and see what I've made:

This is one of my favourite kinds of card - a bit of nature, lots of space, a bit of texture and a splash of colour. I've used the oval one of the Designer Frames embossing folder set. (TIP: If you use the Crease Pad instead of the top cutting pad in your Big Shot sandwich, you don't get any unsightly creases.) The image inside was made with my new Watercolour Winter set and cut out with my extra large Oval punch.

This set is wonderful! It's a two step stamping set (can you see how the outline of the pine cones has been stamped in the darker brown, then they've been 'coloured in' with a filler stamp in a lighter brown?) and it has all the Christmas plant life I need - pine needles and cones, holly with berries and a beautiful poinsettia too!

If you'd like a free seasonal catalogue and a brand new main catalogue and at least £25 worth of Stampin' Up freebies, you might think about joining my October Stampers 6 club. I'd love to have you on board! Click here to find out more.

Here's what you'll need to make this card
Stamps: Watercolour Winter, Teeeny Tiny Wishes
Ink: Marina Mist, Always Artichoke, Early Espresso, Soft Suede, Real Red
Card stock: Crumb Cake, Whisper White
Other: Designer Frames embossing folder, Big Shot, Crease Pad, extra large Oval punch, stamp-a-majig, Dazzling Diamonds glitter, Cherry Cobbler bakers twine (not yet available)

I'd be delighted to order any of these items for you and have them delivered straight to your address in the UK. I'm committed to providing excellent customer service and am always happy to offer help and advice. To place your order, just send me an email or give me a call on 01280 820593. Click here to view my regularly updated lists of retiring stamps and accessories, some at up to 40% discount.

My son made a fruit salad at school yesterday. He informed me at bedtime the night before (naturally!) that he needed to bring in five types of fruit and some juice... I had an apple, some melon and some strawberries and, after scrambling around the kitchen, came up with a can of peaches and some frozen raspberries! His homework was to ask a couple of people to taste it and write what they'd thought of it. I wrote: "I like the way the raspberries combine with the peach juice and the crisp texture of the apple." My daughter was much more imaginative. She wrote: "It's like Christmas in my mouth!"

Thanks for dropping in today. Have a lovely weekend and I'll be back on Monday.
Hugs,
