A card made from snippets

Hello crafting friends!

As well as having a box for offcuts of card stock and a drawer full of patterned paper, I have a little box where I put flowers I've coloured but that didn't work out; backgrounds that turned out a little too bright or the wrong colour; the sentiments I stamped and fussy cut only to find that the card needed something smaller/bigger... Everyone has a box like that don't they? Well, today I challenged myself to make a card using items from that box! Come and see:

I used an off cut of vanilla card stock to make a card panel, masked off the central square and stamped the bird and branch in light brown ink. This is a favourite image of mine - from a long-ago retired Stampin' Up set called Touch of Nature. The blue background was roughly watercoloured with distress ink and the leaves coloured with a marker.

The two-tone frame was glued into place and the coloured bird popped up on dimensionals to hide the join on the right hand side. I stamped and fussy cut a few extra leaves to cover the join on the left hand side.

The sentiment was then attached to the bottom of the frame and the card panel glued to the card base. To finish the card I added punched vellum flowers, coloured on the back with a pink marker and centred with green gems.

So where did the snippets come from originally? Well, a while ago, I had stamped and coloured two of these birds when I was making this card but only ended up needing one. The two-tone frame was cut for this card but I couldn't use it because it was too large - the frame I ended up using was cut from the centre of this one. And I can't remember what card the sentiment was stamped and fussy cut for but it's stamped on cream card stock, which is rare for me, and has been lurking in the snippets box for a long time!

This is my snippets box - just a little one. I go through it occasionally and get rid of anything that I'm not drawn to or that has got battered!

And this is the kind of mess I make when making a snippety card!

CHALLENGES
Pixie's Snippet Playground has always appealed to my sense of 'If it doesn't work here it might work somewhere else'! I'm entering this card there. I'm also linking up with Addicted to Stamps and More, where Anything Goes.

AND IN OTHER NEWS
Storm Dennis has arrived and it is pouring with rain outside and the wind has picked up. Eva and I went for a long walk this morning and have had a great game of hide and seek (she has to do a nice sit-stay while I hide treats and then she gets to go and find them!) Now, I am about to try and persuade an elderly King Charles Spaniel that it's a good idea to go for a walk in this weather! Wish me luck!

Do you have a snippets box like I do? I'd love to hear what you do with the things you make that don't work out as intended.

Hugs,

  1. Vicky! What a super card - I adore it, and also that you let us peek at your snippets as well.Gosh you have some self control - mine is an expanding file, bursting at the seams with plain snippets in, filed under colours - plus a whole host of leftovers in the backs of patterned paper pads. Bless you in this weather and walking dogs. Right now it's blowing a gale and chucking it down with rain. Dudley is about to be encouraged to peep outside for a 'teatime tinkle'. So if you see a little, scalped, Havanese heading your way - do try and catch him for us! :)

    Hugs

    1. LOL, no Di, I ALSO have a plain card stock box which is huge and a whole drawer full of patterned papers! This box is just for the bits and pieces I make that don't turn out and that I can't bear to throw away!

Yes, The Dudley Balloon... I think it could catch on!!!

    2. Huge sigh of relief here that you had tons more snippets than what I thought was the sum total! Dudley didn't blow away after all - little tinker performed and then ran straight back indoors.

    1. Thank you Kath! And all out of bits and pieces that would have been thrown away! I am practically a womble! x

  3. I have one of these boxes. In fact I have several. I call them UFOs (UnFinished Objects). I always love your birds and this is one of my favorite sets that I hang on to. This is a reminder that I need to show it some love. I hope Dennis doesn't hang around long and the sun will come out!

    1. I bet your boxes are overflowing with fabulous things Bonnie! Mine will also be called UFOs from this moment on - does Darnell know about this?!!! Think Dennis is on the way out. Missing him already!

  4. That's a lovely snippets card Vicky, I like the two tone frame too. I keep all my card stock snippets with my whole pieces. I also do the same with my papers. I find they get used more that way. Other snippets are kept for a while, then if not used they go in the bin! Stay safe xxx

    1. That sounds a good idea Lesley. I'm thinking of getting some folders and keeping the off cuts of plain card stock with my full sheets. That would save some space and make me use the smaller bits first because I'd only have one place to look. The drawer of DSP can stay because I don't use it that often and when I do, I just turn the whole lot out to find the perfect piece!
All good here after the storm, hope you are too xxx

  5. I have a SMALL set of plastic drawers on my craft desk split into similar colours of cardstock ready to die cut and punch out as necessary. Larger snippets are in a plastic bag all together and that's IT. I try to use up snippets first . . . but like you . . . if the smaller bits have sat around for aaaaages and got dog-eared, they get binned.

BTW: I love your snippets bird card. Another spring-like creation despite the stormy weather!

  6. I LOVE you made your card out of snippets, such a lovley combination to make a whole beautiful card.
We've been to see a bit of flooding today, thankfully gone down, but what a mess it left, those poor people.

    1. It's good fun making cards completely out of snippets!
The flooding is awful isn't it. It's been so wet that the water has had no time to drain away between floods, so it just keeps getting worse and worse. Glad you're safe and dry Faith.

  7. What a fabulous way to use up your scraps! I keep a scrap box and it’s overflowing! Normally it’s where Rebecca goes if she wants to make something but you’ve inspired me to give it a clear out this week, although I suspect I won’t be able to come up with a snippets creation that is anywhere near as artistic!!
